Compress a video for Discord: under 10 MB without the mush
Without Nitro, Discord takes files up to 10 MB. A minute of 1080p gameplay is usually ten times that. The trick is to pick the bitrate from the clip's length, and lower the resolution only as much as that bitrate needs.
Compress a clip for DiscordThe arithmetic
10 MB is about 80 000 kilobits. Keep 8 % for the container, take off the audio (96 kbit/s), divide by the seconds: a 30-second clip gets about 2 400 kbit/s of video, a 2-minute one about 530.
- Over 1 500 kbit/s: 1280 × 720 looks good.
- 700–1 500: 854 × 480.
- Below 700: 640 wide, or trim the clip shorter.
Trim before you compress
Every second you cut gives the rest more bitrate. Ten seconds of build-up and the play itself is what people watch in a chat.
